Looking at our family photos below, could you tell that minutes before, I was chasing my children around the small studio trying to get them to stand still in front of the camera and smile?
I had been toying with the idea of getting some professional photos taken of our family for my About Page.
So it was very timely that the folks at Picture People UAE recently invited a bunch of us UAE mom bloggers to their new studio for a mini photo shoot.
There were quite a few other families there so by the time it was our turn, the kids had been restless after sitting and playing iPad for an hour.
The minute they entered the photo studio, they BOTH started running around like little Tasmanian devils, one feeding off the other’s restless energy. Li’L Ginger kept throwing herself on a beanbag chair and when I asked her to come over to me for the photo shoot, she would pretend to sleep on the beanbag.
Wee Scotch was just jumping from one bench to another bench. Over and over and over again. If there was a rope, he would have jumped on to that too and swung around like Tarzan.
At one point, I did get them both to sit down with Scotch and I but not before threatening my son that I would throw out all his Legos and Transformers if he didn’t behave. I then tried resorting to bribery with chocolate cookies. Neither of which worked very well and they were both off and running around again.
I chased them back to the backdrop but could only keep one kid there at a time up. After a few more attempts at bribery – BIG FAIL – I decided to make the photo shoot into a game.
I asked both kids to stand under the studio light and make funny faces and play monkey see monkey do. They were to mimic me as I stood next to the photographer.
I was shouting things like, “Hands on hip” now “Hug your sister” now “Stick you tongue out” and “Hold Hands” now “Reach for the Stars” now “Blue Steel like Zoolander!”
That last prompt went way over everyone’s heads but we did get a few good shots of the kids.
While they were up there, having fun and distracted, I ran up to them, hugged them close and we were able to get this shot:
And finally, we managed to get the family portrait at the top of this post. You may have noticed the red bag of chocolate cookies peeking out under my legs.
I had to Photoshop that out of the picture to get this final version:
I’m just amazed and relieved that we were able to get any good photos considering the children’s silly antics. But the photographer was patient and great to work with and was able to pull off all the shots that I wanted.
Maybe one day we’ll actually do a proper photo shoot (if I could convince my husband to relive this experience again). And probably best not to schedule it during Li’L Ginger’s nap time as she totally looks like she’s ready to fall asleep in the family photo with her mouth wide open like she’s caught in a yawn.
Tips for a Successful Photo Shoot with Kids:
- Choose a studio that’s good with kids and are used to working with them;
- Don’t schedule the shoot during the kids’ meals nor nap times;
- Make the session fun – turn it into a game;
- Bring toys they can hold and show off (and that will keep them from running round);
- Bring a few outfits for a variety of photos.
A big thank you to Picture People for organizing the first UAE Mom Bloggers coffee morning. It was great to meet and connect with other mom bloggers in the region:
Besides the group photo, they also produced this really cool video of our coffee morning event (click here if video does not load):
