Ramadan Kareem 2015
Ramadan Kareem!

This year, the holy month of Ramadan began June 18th and will end July 17th-ish. Wee Scotch’s last day of Kindergarten this year was also June 18th and he and I had been talking all week prior about how we were going to get burgers after school to celebrate the end of a successful school year.

So after the last day of school, I drove the kids over to a local coffee shop/diner called Mugg and Bean only to find the doors completely locked. I was very perplexed on why the place was closed until I suddenly remembered that Ramadan had commenced and that most food outlets were closed during daylight hours.

So now I had to drag two very hungry kids to the Waitrose next door to do some grocery shopping which was a complete nightmare as LiL Ginger just whined the whole 20 minutes we were food shopping because she wanted to eat and couldn’t understand why I kept dangling all this food in front of her and putting it into the shopping cart instead of letting her have some of it.

Anyway, I raced through the grocery store as fast as I could so that we could get home quickly and make grilled ham and cheddar cheese sandwiches with home-made pickles and Thousand Island sauce – the kids’ current favorite.

And then the weekend came and we took the kids bowling after running a few errands which meant they were cranky and hungry again and of course the on-site restaurant at the bowling center wasn’t open for Ramadan. I had some emergency snacks in my bag but Cheerios and raisins can only hold off the crankiness so much before the kids begin their meltdowns again.

So we quickly bowled one set and then headed over to the Souk Madinat to pig out at The Noodle House which was, thankfully, open for Ramadan. LiL Ginger was so hungry she was screaming and hitting everything and everyone within reach – until the food arrived.

Lucky for the kids and I, we don’t have to worry about restaurant closures anymore as we have made our annual summer exodus from Dubai to New York where it is a high of 75°F (24°C) at the moment instead of Dubai’s 110°F (43°C). The kids are already having a blast playing outside again, going to playgrounds, and running in and out of sprinklers.

If you don’t already, please follow me on Instagram and Twitter where I will be posting weekly (maybe daily!) food and travel pics from our summer travels.

For those of you who will be staying in Dubai for the summer, be sure to check out my recent post on 7 Fun Indoor Activities for Kids in Dubai including rock climbing, skateboarding, trampolining, skiing, and visiting the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. Many of these activities have two-for-one vouchers in the Entertainer Dubai (in both the family and the kids editions).

And now, here is the chance for two Ginger and Scotch blog readers to win The Entertainer Dubai Kids 2015 – mobile edition. The purchase price for the mobile app is 225 dhs.

The Entertainer books contain hundreds of Buy One, Get One Free offers which we use quite often at outlets throughout Dubai. From the Dubai Kids edition, we have used vouchers for the Dubai Aquarium, skiing at Ski Dubai, rock climbing at Adventure HQ, Mini Monsters, and many others. If you have more than one child, you can take advantage of the many two-for-one kids meal vouchers at places such as The Noodle House, Rainforest Cafe, and Haagen Dazs.

When we are back at the end of summer, we are looking forward to going to Aquaventure at the Atlantis, Yas Waterworld, and Wild Wadi. The book practically pays for itself when you use a few of those vouchers. And if you have out of town guests, there are offers for Desert Safaris and the Big Bus Tour.

The last two years, I have purchased the mobile apps in lieu of the physical vouchers because I don’t have to carry the bulky books with me everywhere I go (we have three of the products: Fine Dining, Family, and Kids which is a lot of bulk!) and the vouchers are always on hand (the app does require an internet connection).

6 & 5 enjoy visisting Kidzania and Ski Dubai. Last we visisted there both were too small. Wish to take them both there again as I love the activities I do with them like enjoying in ice slides. Making snowman throwing snowballs on each other and in Kidzania I love getting them engaged with in interactive activities while observing a totally different side of ur kids.

  6. Dubai has so many places for Kids, Ski Dubai in MOE, Wall Climbing at MCC and the mini golf at Wafi. Also love hanging out the Children City in Creek
    park

  7. During summer we love to hit the beach early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Going to sharjah aquarium and playdates are fun too.We also love to eat ice cream.

  8. We love swimming in the summer and doing day trips and staycations. The kids love it when we go to the Cove Rotana in RAK, because the pool is lovely and so is the kids club. We also just lounge by the community pool in the neighbourhood. Out of the 2 months we usually travel to india for a month and the kids love being spoiled rotten by their grandparents.

  9. Our favourtie thing to do when it gets hot is to hit the beach super early. That way, the energy levels get burnt up and the rest of the day isn’t so manic. Also, both kids go for daily swim classes at 5pm and we do one ‘activity’ like making soap/play dough etc a day. Between all this, we are pretty much set for summer.

  10. With our kids, we love to go to the indoor zoo Arabian wildlife center! Also to the many museums in Sharjah.

  11. Now it’s really hot outside, we love to go to malls to enjoy “Aquarium , little explore, Kidzania …” , and later go for iftar.
